The Woman I’m Building

By Dami Adenuga

I don’t think I ever realised how many choices a woman makes in a single day until I became a mother, a founder, and an Operations Director. Every morning starts with a negotiation, not with my daughter, not with the world, but with myself.

What will I give today, and what will I quietly let go of?

People often say “you can have it all,” but they forget to add that you can’t always have it all at the same time. Something always needs attention, and something else will have to wait. As uncomfortable as that truth is, it has shaped the woman I am becoming.

I’m one of the founders of The Organised Mums, a business built by three working mothers who understand the invisible mental load women carry. Alongside that, my full-time career as an Operations Director demands clarity, leadership, and constant decision-making. And then there is my beautiful, intelligent and understanding little girl, who sits at the very centre of everything I do.

My days are a collage of calendars, deadlines, voice notes, and school drop-offs. I joke that I live in “productive chaos,” but the reality is more sensitive: I’m constantly weighing my options.
Do I stay at work longer or rush home for bedtime?
Do I fit in a gym session or catch up on business tasks?
Do I let her join swimming now, even though the timings clash with my work hours?

Every decision carries a cost. Not because I’m doing anything wrong, but because I’m trying to build a life that expands possibilities, especially for my daughter.

Take the swimming classes. They run at times I simply can’t make. I used to feel guilty, like I was already falling behind on the kind of mother I wanted to be. But I eventually realised it’s not failure; it’s timing. She might miss swimming now, but I’m working to give her a future full of choices the kind of future where access and opportunity aren’t limited by circumstance.

Motherhood is full of these quiet sacrifices, the ones no one sees but every mother feels deeply. The ones you carry in silence, hoping your children will one day understand.

Motherhood

A few months ago, I started a fitness journey, not because I suddenly had spare time, but because I needed to reclaim a part of myself. I wanted to feel strong again, present in my own body, not just in my responsibilities. Even that requires sacrifice: early mornings, shifted routines, choosing myself for one hour in a day that already feels full. But when I feel stronger, I show up better at home, at work, and in my business.

The truth is, every day as a woman, especially a working mother, is a balancing act between what you want to give and what you need to protect. Some days everything flows; other days something inevitably slips. But I’ve learned to accept that slipping doesn’t mean failing.

What keeps me moving is the vision of the life I’m building for my daughter. I don’t want to give her an ordinary start. I want her to see that she comes from resilience, ambition, softness, and strength. I want her to grow up knowing she can be many things at once – because she watched me do it in real time, even when it was hard.

I’m not chasing perfection. I’m chasing purpose. I’m building a life where my daughter sees a mother who made brave choices, embraced growth, and kept going despite the weight of it all.

The woman I’m building is still in progress. She’s learning. Stretching. Becoming. But she’s also proud; proud of the sacrifices, proud of the growth, proud of the vision that keeps her steady on the days that feel impossible.

Every sacrifice today is a seed for tomorrow. And one day, my daughter will walk through the garden I’m planting now.

  1. 👏🏾👏🏾 very great write up! Really something always has to give in motherhood, and too often it’s us! But not anymore!! I love that you’re reclaiming things for yourself!! It’s truly time!

  2. This reflection captures the quiet strength behind every choice a working mother makes. The woman you are building is shaped by intention, sacrifice, and purpose, and your daughter is growing up watching resilience in real time. It is a powerful reminder that slipping is not failing, and that every small decision becomes part of the future we are planting for our children.
